OVERVIEW

WHO USES IT, WHAT IT DOES, AND WHY IT PAYS.

SUMMARY

Our screw conveyors (LSS series representative) deliver controlled volumetric feeding and horizontal to moderately inclined transport of dry to slightly damp bulk solids. Robust helicoid or sectional flighting, precision-aligned troughs, and optimized pitch/rotation matching reduce power draw, prevent surging, and stabilize downstream process feed. Modular covers, quick-open inspection ports, and standardized hanger / end bearings simplify maintenance. Options include shaftless designs for fibrous or sticky sludges, wear liners for abrasives, food-grade polishing, nitrogen purge, and CIP spray integration. Engineered to reduce dust escape, fugitive spillage, and excessive bearing wear, lowering total cost of ownership (TCO).

APPLICATIONS & MATERIALS

Industries:

  • Food & Ingredients: flour, starch, sugar, salt, meal, additives
  • Agriculture & Feed: grains, oilseed meal, premix, pellets
  • Chemicals & Minerals: calcium carbonate, talc, soda ash, pigments, fertilizers
  • Mining & Aggregates: dry fines, filter cake (with shaftless), sand, bentonite
  • Biomass & Energy: pellets, sawdust, fly ash (dry), bio-char
  • Recycling & Plastics: regrind, flakes, pellets
  • Environmental / Waste: dewatered sludge (shaftless), screenings

Typical Materials: Flour, Starch, Sugar, Salt, Grain, Meal, Ash, Fly Ash, Cement Powder, Sand, Bentonite, Plastic Pellets, Chips, Wood Dust, Pelletized Fertilizer.

Not Ideal Without Modification: Very wet, highly cohesive, large fibrous, explosive dust without protection, materials prone to rapid caking (unless conditioned).

CONFIGURATIONS & CONSTRUCTION

  • Layout: Horizontal, slight incline (≤20° typical), steep incline (derated), vertical (with special design), multi-inlet / multi-discharge.
  • Types: Shafted helicoid flight, sectional flight, ribbon flight (heat transfer or sticky), paddle, shaftless (for stringy / viscous).
  • Trough Forms: U-trough with bolted covers, tubular (pipe) screw for better containment, jacketed (thermal).
  • Materials: Carbon steel, SS304, SS316, duplex (on request), AR wear strips, polymer liners (UHMW, PTFE).
  • Drives: End direct-drive gearmotor, shaft-mounted reducer, chain & sprocket (retrofit), VFD speed control.
  • Seals: Lip seals, lantern ring, air purge, stuffing box, mechanical seal (critical containment).
  • Bearings: End thrust bearings (heavy-duty roller), intermediate hanger bearings (UHMW / bronze / ceramic / graphite), or eliminated (shaftless).
  • Covers: Quick clamp, bolted, hinged, gasketed (dust-tight).

KEY FEATURES

  • Controlled volumetric feed and discharge
  • Modular sections for scalable length
  • Optional shaftless design for sticky / stringy materials
  • Low dust emission with sealed covers and purge options
  • Custom pitch (full, short, variable) for uniform loading and surge control
  • Wear / corrosion resistant liners and flight hardfacing options
  • Easy-access inspection and clean-out ports
  • VFD-ready drive to optimize throughput vs. power draw

ADVANTAGES

Process Stability & Accuracy

  • Uniform pitch or variable pitch start zone improves consistent loading
  • VFD speed trim allows fine feed rate adjustment upstream of reactors / mills
  • Predictable volumetric output supports stable mass balance

Energy Efficiency

  • Proper fill factor reduces wasted torque
  • Optimized hanger spacing lowers frictional losses
  • Short-pitch in incline sections prevents fallback, lowering re-convey energy

Reliability & Uptime

  • Precision-aligned trough flanges reduce bearing misalignment
  • Hardfacing or AR liners extend life in abrasive service
  • Shaftless eliminates intermediate hangers (major wear point) for problem materials

Hygiene & Cleanability (Food / Pharma Options)

  • Polished stainless internal surfaces
  • Removable flight sections or quick-slide covers
  • CIP spray bar or dry air purge for cross-contamination control

Safety & Environment

  • Fully covered to mitigate dust and operator exposure
  • Interlocked covers (option) and rotation guards
  • Explosion mitigation (monitoring + vents or isolation for high Kst dust)

Lifecycle Cost Reduction

  • Modular rebuild (replace flights or liners without replacing entire body)
  • Condition-based maintenance with bearing temp & vibration sensors
  • Extended service intervals via optimized seal/liner selection

FEATURES

STANDARD FEATURES

MODELS

FAQ

How far can a single screw conveyor run?

  1. Practical economic length often ≤40 m for shafted (with hangers); shaftless shorter due to torque & deflection. Longer runs may segment with transfer points.

Maximum incline?

  1. Standard design efficient up to about 20–25°. Above that, capacity drops sharply—consider vertical screw (special) or alternate elevator.

Difference between helicoid and sectional flighting?

  1. Helicoid is cold-formed continuous (fewer joints, smoother flow). Sectional is individual segments welded (flexible for variable pitch, heavy-duty or special alloys).

When to use shaftless?

  1. High moisture, sticky sludge, fibrous, stringy, or irregular particles that would bind on center pipe or clog hanger supports.
